Sulky Mastery Competition

Related articles concerning sulky riding, dressage (there are many more articles on ponyplayin general on my site - mostly in Czech language :-(
Kai's article pony dressage, my article sulky - general overhaul, whose latter (and a bit longer) half discusses the commands we use during dressage and riding, and also a brand new article cross-country sulky - making of; the instructions for building my original sulky are good read too (the article is about 3 years old and it also lists more links to other ponyplay gear I made/we use). End of my comments (tk)

Commands using bridle and reins during dressage and during sulky riding

Simply put, the same commands are used during sulky riding and dressage..

Obstacle racing

During Pet Week 2001, an obstacle race was organized.

Permitted gear for the driver and the pony: a sulky, a bridle, a bit with reins and a riding crop. No voice commands were permitted, except for driving off – hyjeeeee (tsk, tsk) - and stopping - prrrrr (wouw). The driver must not turn or brake the sulky using his/her hands or legs.

Another important detail: the pony is blindfolded during the race.

Start

The pony is harnessed to the sulky and his/her hooves just touch the start line. A straight section of the track is followed by a turn and a slalom.
1. stopping, face forward. The pony is led to the barrier slowly and must not knock it down. Overrun of the barrier or failed approach to the barrier are considered faults and penalized..
2. „backing/parking“. The pony is driven from the barrier (1) to a curve, until the wheels of the sulky touch the barrier. After "parking", the driver comannds the pony to go forward through the slalom and into a tight circle..
3. „Carousel“. The arms of a simple carousel can turn around a central vertical axle. The driver must catch the axle when passing it, and turn the sulky with the pony around the carousel. Of course the driver has only one free hand to hold the reins and control the pony when turning.
4. This circle is very tight, as it is constrained from three sides.
5. After this turn, the sulky drives towards the finish line. The trust between the driver and the pony (their accord) is assessed by the judges
Finish line: the timer will stop when the sulky passes the finish line

The ranking is based on the driving time. Any fault leads to additional seconds (penalization).

Fault - Seconds added
Skipped obstacle - 50s
Knocked-down obstacle - 20s
Forbidden assistance - 50s

Remark by tk: another important parameter, which is not provided in the original article: the yard at the Danish farm where PetWeek takes place, i.e. the dimensions of the slalom course inthe picture, is approximately 18x25 m. Blindfolded ponies therefore pass the track within a range of several minutes. For example, the backing described above (point 2) is not easy and the penalizationof several tens of seconds is therefore "just right".
